Background
The destruction of the forests caused by acid rain, the depletion of the ozone layer caused by fluorocarbons, and global warming caused by increased carbon dioxide all negatively impact the environment. Air pollution as a result of the widespread use of automobiles, particularly in cities, is becoming more prevalent. These factors, individually and collectively, lead to the earth's rapid deterioration.
Carmakers around the world have been involved in the research and development of cars that eliminate or reduce exhaust gas emissions. These manufacturers have created and started to market electric or solar powered vehicles that address this concern. Unfortunately these vehicles have not been able to adequately meet consumer needs such as market pricing and range of travel. Nor will these vehicles likely be commercially viable for many years to come. This research has been dogged by problems, including the enormous costs to develop a modified non or low polluting vehicle.
